NVIDIA advocates for reauthorization of US National Quantum Initiative

NVIDIA publicly advocated for the reauthorization of the National Quantum Initiative (NQI), a program created in 2018 to coordinate federal investment in quantum computing in the United States. According to the company, the initiative is essential to maintain economic competitiveness, national security, and scientific leadership in the face of rapid advances in quantum technologies. According to NVIDIA, the advances made since NQI's creation—such as improvements in qubit coherence, gate fidelity, and system scalability—demonstrate the value of a coordinated national strategy involving universities, national labs, and industry. However, the company states that the current strategy needs to evolve to reflect the convergence of quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing. The proposal aligns with what the US government has called the "Genesis Mission," an initiative seeking to double the country's scientific productivity by integrating AI, supercomputing, and quantum systems as a new generation of scientific instruments. In this context, NVIDIA argues that isolated quantum computers are not enough: a hybrid architecture is needed where CPUs, GPUs, and QPUs operate in an integrated manner. The company highlights technologies such as NVQLink, for low-latency interconnection between GPUs and quantum processors, and CUDA-Q, an open platform that allows unified programming of classical and quantum systems. According to NVIDIA, AI is already critical for tasks such as quantum error correction, hardware calibration, and discovery of new algorithms. Among the recommendations to Congress are investments in quantum hardware simulation, AI infrastructure for error correction, creation of AI-quantum computing integration hubs, reference hybrid scientific applications, and definition of clear metrics to evaluate truly useful quantum systems. For NVIDIA, NQI reauthorization is decisive for turning scientific advances into long-term strategic advantage.
