Anthropic partners with UK government to integrate safe AI into GOV.UK services
AI applied to the public sector promises to transform access to jobs and government services
Anthropic
01/27/2026Anthropic announced a strategic partnership with the UK government to develop and test an AI assistant integrated with GOV.UK, the country's official public services portal. The initiative, led by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), aims to facilitate citizens' access to government services through personalized guidance, starting with employability support.
The assistant will be built on the Claude model and goes beyond traditional automated responses. It was designed to actively guide users through government processes, maintaining context between interactions and adapting recommendations to individual circumstances. This represents a relevant technical advance in the use of conversational AI applied to complex, critical public sector flows.
Security is a central pillar of the project. Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding in February 2025, Anthropic and the British government have been collaborating to ensure AI integration occurs responsibly, with users retaining full control over their data and full compliance with UK data protection legislation. This approach positions the project as a global reference for safe government AI.
The initial use case focuses on people entering or returning to the job market. The assistant will help identify job opportunities, access training, understand available benefits, and direct users to the right services, reducing friction and increasing public service efficiency. The ability to maintain context reduces repetition of information and significantly improves the citizen experience.
From an institutional perspective, the partnership also aims to build the British government's own capacity. Anthropic engineers will work alongside Government Digital Service teams to transfer technical knowledge, allowing the UK to maintain and evolve the system independently in the future. This strategy strengthens digital sovereignty and internal AI expertise.
The collaboration between Anthropic and the UK reinforces a clear trend: adoption of AI in the public sector is moving from isolated experiments to structural, safe, and scalable solutions.
